The XTRACT project aims to develop a sustainable ecosystem for innovative resource recovery and complex ore extraction. The goal is to reduce ore losses and mining waste through a novel system for controlling ore loss and dilution, thereby reducing overall mine emissions and economic loss. XTRACT will develop and validate innovative microinvasive technologies and solutions tailored for remote, “hard-to-reach” locations and small quantities where extraction is typically unprofitable. The in-situ bioleaching process and membrane treatment will be optimized to achieve maximum metal recovery.
Launched in December 2023, XTRACT is a three-year Horizon Europe-funded initiative involving 14 partner organizations from 9 European countries. The project aims to contribute to the EU Climate Neutrality Goals by introducing low-TRL green technologies for mine waste remediation and the extraction of precious metals. XTRACT aligns with the European Commission’s ambition for self-sufficiency in critical raw materials essential for the green and digital transition.
